The White-Washing of White Culture: Unraveling the Sinister Truth

In popular culture, "white culture" is often reduced to a punchline, characterized as boring, bland, and lacking in substance. The association with white bread, mayo, unseasoned food, pretentious children's names, and Starbucks coffee perpetuates this stereotype. However, the reality is that white culture is far from innocuous - it bears the weight of a darker history. This is what I call the white-washing of white culture. From The Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition to colonialism, the slave trade, and the atomic bomb, white people of the global West have been responsible for numerous unsavory actions and systems. It's time to confront the truth and recognize the role of white culture in perpetuating pain, suffering, and strife worldwide.

A Legacy of Entitlement:
Western white culture has been built on a foundation of entitlement, consuming more than its fair share of resources, time, and energy from others. Our lifestyle of highways, gasoline cars, air conditioning, fast fashion, processed foods, and plastic everything comes at the expense of entire communities, lands, and dreams of other people. It is crucial that we acknowledge this imbalance and the responsibility we bear as Americans - the epitome of white culture.

Facing Uncomfortable Truths:
Until we as white people confront our innate tendencies towards entitlement, impatience, aggression, and ignorance, the jokes about our perceived blandness or lack of culture will rightfully fall flat for the rest of the world and for those among us who strive to live differently. We must recognize that the pain, sadness, discontent, anxiety, disconnection, and depression we experience are reasonable responses to the realities and the uncertain futures we face. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we need to direct our energy towards healing the brokenness within our own people, starting with our own families, communities, and countries.

A Call to Action:
As a white practitioner of psychedelic guiding, I firmly believe that my greatest calling lies in addressing the brokenness within my own culture. It is essential that we prioritize our own healing and transformation before attempting to engage with the rest of the world. Through the work we do in addressing the roots of our own unhappiness and discontent, we can pave the way for mindset shifts, new realities, and previously unthinkable possibilities.

Expanding Perspectives:
It is not enough to only work with those within our community who understand and support our journey. We must also extend our efforts to those who may be harder to see - those who hide behind walls of privilege and comfort, living solely for their own benefit, and failing to acknowledge the impact their actions have on others. By bringing our work to those who truly need it in society, we have the opportunity to create profound change and bridge the gaps that divide us.

The white-washing of white culture is a harmful misconception that serves to perpetuate ignorance and mask the sinister reality of its history and present-day impact. It is imperative that we reject weaponized ignorance and collectively face the uncomfortable truths about our culture, taking responsibility for the pain and suffering it has caused. Through our work in healing and transformation, we can actively contribute to a more equitable and compassionate world for all.
